Should You Count Calories? (Enough Already!) – Thomas DeLauer
I’m going to shift the way that you look at calories forever. You see when it comes down to getting in the best shape. When it comes down to burning fat, there’s a couple of simple things that you have to understand, but first and foremost, we need to know what this is. This is five pounds of fat. All right? That equals 17,500 calories. That means that you need to be in a deficit of 17,500 calories to burn this much fat. So now, let me ask you a question. Does it matter whether you are in a calorie deficit over the course of one day or over the course of two days or maybe even over the course of a week? You see it really comes down to thermodynamics and how much calories in calories out, but over a different scale, not just over one day. You see so this is where we need to shift the paradigm as to how we look at things.
It doesn’t matter what you’re consuming over the course of one day. Why? Because your body doesn’t know what 24 hours is. That’s up here. You see we’ve developed a cognitive awareness of 24 hours. Twenty-four hours, in essence, is kind of this artificial manmade thing. We know the sun goes down, we know the moon comes up, we know it gets dark, all that we know what 24 hours is, but does our physiology truly know? I mean outside of our circadian rhythm, outside of our sleep-wake cycle, does our bioenergetics, is our body really know at 24 hours is? Let me make some sense of this.
You see if you look at consuming calories over the course of a day, you’re just assuming that we have this clock that resets at midnight, and our caloric needs reset to zero every midnight. That’s not the case. Our calories or ever revolving, whether we’re sleeping, whether it’s midnight, whether it’s 2:00 AM, we always have a need for calories, and we always need to be in somewhat of a deficit, but sometimes we’re going to be in a surplus and sometimes we’re going to be in a deficit. You see at the very minute that you are eating food, you’re going to surplus that very second, that very frozen point in time, of course, you’re in a surplus.
You are consuming more than you’re burning unless you’re maybe eating something that has so little calories that it doesn’t matter. If you were taking a bite of steak or taking a bite of a burrito at that very second time, you are in a caloric surplus. Does that mean that you’re getting fat? No. Okay, so when we look at it from the course of a day, it’s just as crazy. We are freezing this moment in time and we’re thinking that this is the end all be all for our calories. No, no, no. Back it up. Take a look through a wide lens for a second.
Think about it. Over the course of a few days, over the course of a week, stop measuring your calories daily, that’s just going to drive you crazy and all you’re doing is becoming a victim to all the self-proclaimed diet gurus that are out there that only look at studies and only look at this artificial breakdown of day in and day out. Honestly, this part just irks me.
What about bioenergetics? What about different catalysts that elicit more of a powerful metabolic response? Okay, now, sure I will give credit where credit is due. At the end of the day, calories in versus calories out do matter, but at what point do calories in versus calories out just cause you to die? If you were to go for a certain amount of time in a calorie deficit, you would obviously not function anymore, but at what point does fat gain start?
Does it start at 24 hours of a calorie surplus or does it start at three days of a calorie surplus or does it start at 90 seconds of a calorie surplus? It’s always occurring. It’s always a checks and balances, and if we didn’t have other hormonal factors, other catecholamine like adrenaline, epinephrine and stuff like that, factoring in, then that would mean that every time we eat food, we’re putting ourselves in this net gain of calories. You know what I’m saying? So we do have to factor in so many different things. For example, Glucagon.
Let me give you an example here. If you need 3000 calories just to maintain your weight every day, if that’s roughly what you figured your BMR is, that’s 21,000 calories over the course of a single week that you would be consuming to maintain the same weight. Okay, well let’s make things really simple. If you go one day where you fast, okay, that’s going to be roughly a 3000 calorie deficit. That’s almost a pound a week right there.
Calories in, calories out cannot be determined by a 24 hour man-made artificial period of time. Look at it through a wider lens and you’ll suddenly look at life through a wider lens and I promise you, you won’t be confined to this narrow-minded thinking that is making you miserable. I’ll see you in the next video.

Did mike isratal send a death threat haha
I never count calories…it’s not necessary to stay metabolically healthy.
Man, Can you STFU and get to damn point already
Please make a video on gaining weight, it’s so hard
Ok, watching this video in 2023 and I realize that Thomas is more than just an influencer.
The guy is a pastor of healthy living. Excellent rhetoric and pro-health momentum!
How good it is to see people like you, completely passionate about what you do: helping humans to evolve!
You are amazing brother!
Keep the faith!
Wait what dude, who the hell goes by midnight. You count 24hrs from the last time you ate no?
I never really understood this whole counting calories, macros and all that. Just gives me a headache. I have discovered though that eating the right foods staying away from the garbage foods, the weight just melts off.
I count calories to be sure i eat enough 😐
I’m experimenting with starting my calories at 3000 on Monday and gradually tapering off by 200 cal each day till Saturday which still brings me to my 15,000 cal a week caloric deficit. Fasting on Sunday. Then starting over on Monday at 3000 again.
The hormonal reactions from food, fasting, when you eat, and insulin have a much greater effect on health and weight loss in your body than the amount of calories. That's the difference between calorie counters and those that IF and watch the type of foods they eat.
It somehow true. But it is very problematic. Because most people fast for 16 or 20 or 23 hours top. So they have at least one meal a day. So they have to count that meal every day. What you are saying is true only if i am doing 48 hours fast once a week. In that case i am losing 2000 calories. (In my case). But if i am fasting 23 hours every day and i am consuming 1000 calories at this one meal. I am losing 7000 calories a week !!!! It is much better for fat loss. Even if i am fasting 20 hours and consuming 1200-1500 calories a day. I am still losing 3500-5600 calories a week.
I think Dr. Jason Fung might disagree on that calorie in / calorie out assessment. A day is a thing. You can't say a day is not a thing and then use it to measure a week. A calorie is a measure of heat thrown off when something is burned. A calorie of celery is not the same as a calorie of sugar because of the way these things are metabolized. I can eat 30 calories of sugar but I probably wouldn't eat 30 calories of celery. Quality counts. 300 calories of steak is a lot more satisfying than 300 calories of cake. If a calorie is a calorie then cake equals steak and we all know that's false.
All I know is that 40 years ago I first heard about calories in versus calories out. I started counting my daily calories and kept it around 1500 calories a day for the rest of my life. These days it's much easier with apps like MyFitnessPal. I eat the foods that I like and eat mostly whole foods. That is simply because you get more satiety for fewer calories that way. I am never hungry. My weight has stayed at the recommended level of 185 except for one time when I stopped counting my calories for about 6 months. People have asked me what my secret is for staying at weight. All I can say is that it is a matter of persistence.
P.S. – I threw out my bathroom scale decades ago. I simply monitor the notches in my belt to see how I am doing. The only time I get weighed is when I go for my physical.
What you're suggesting here is called "Crash Dieting" by the "fitness community". Now I'm a big fan of your videos, and I crash diet all the time. It works. The problem is the damage it can cause to normal metabolism. Feeling tired and sluggish after 3 cups of coffee, for example.
The cure foe this is L Carnitine and Turkesterone. L Carnitine to fight fatigue, and Turkesterone (or alternatively, D Aspardic Acid) can help retain muscle mass.
You're all welcome.
Best video yet! Thank you!
Everything said in this video is so obvious that idk why you had to make a video about it. Seriously.
I followed this guy until he told me you can’t break a fast with salad but scallops are okey
Wow! Just perfect! Thank you kind sir!
i love this.
When the sun goes down, and the moon comes up
I turn into a teenage goo goo muck
Yeah, I cruise through the city and I roam the street
Looking for something that is nice to eat…
I never count calories I just cut out all the unhealthy foods I was eating. Literally cut sugar out of my diet plus it wasn’t sustainable for a 15 year old
Great explanation thank you Thomas
Cheers from France 🇫🇷
Merci beaucoup 👍🏼
Wowwww!!!! Thanks for this! You’re the bomb.com Thomas!!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Its werid but I have gotten to a point I know if I need protein or fat , even just if I need calories in general. My body gets cold when I need protein, I get tired when I need fats and I get bitchy when I need just calories in general. Now that I figured out my body it's easier to keep me happy and feeling good
You’ve just said don’t follow typical diet but then haven’t given a direction of what a diet should look like. Maybe tell us what u eat in a week? Slightly confusing tbh
I get your point but no one have intention of getting lean/bulked in ONE DAY. Counting calories/macros is a tool of getting food intake under control in LONG RUN. Me example, I couldn't lose weight (fat) UNTIL I started counting calories. Of course it's not impossible (bodybuilders in golden era didn't count anything) but it's unnecessarily more difficult to achieve your goals without it.
When driving a car whats easier and faster for reaching destination? – driving with handbrake on or off?
Hate mail and death threats. This is why we have laws in place to protect free speech from whack jobs, who respond to differences of opinion in a borderline or full criminal way. I don't agree with everything Thomas says, but I don't get enraged or homicidal. The people that do need a sauerkraut juice enema to chill.
Every time I stop counting calories I put on weight. TBH the only thing that does work for me is fasting. And even if you look at it through a wider lense you still need to know what you've consumed in a week and if you don't track then you don't know, and if you don't know – you don't know. And I know that I stop tracking it's because I over-consume and am not honest with myself.
Tried intermittent for 3days now and I can feel the change, not yet seeing it much but I can feel it not like when I count calories, it's like waiting for a miracle to happen while looking in the mirror. I salute you sir! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge!:) From Philippines, I believe in you:)
I am miserable cause I counted calories, and I never lost or regained. I am on keto now for three days and already feel more energetic and less confused or sluggish. I used to do it years before and it was the only diet style that helped me shed my stupid fat
What about thermodynamics?
Right on Brother! Good positive sh!t! You have helped millions!
The king of bro science calling out “gurus” LMFAO
I am trying to build muscle. But on keto I can get 1500-1700 calories at most with 2 meals. I can get good amounts of proteins and fats but…
Should I focus on nutrients or calories?
People around me keep saying you should get more calories, is it true ?
Bravo!
What about the circadian rhythm?
They say when you have haters….you've made it 🤷🏾♀️ keep up the good work. I am barely discovering you and I cannot say enough how much I am grateful I found you. Day 2 of Keto. 🙏
I'm confused. So explain how or what to do on a daily. Do I count calories or skip hours before I eat, eat how many times a day. Or skip days or what
Have a question maybe you can help me with this one lol, I pass out at times when I get a shot in the hospital or when I get my blood drawn why is this?
Do you need a calorie deficit when you’re trying to gain muscle mass? And also lose weight in the midsection?
I have a question about keto and calories that I can’t find an answer for anywhere.
I am 31, 6’ 2”, 280 lbs. When I calculate my Body Metabolic Rate even with no working out my rate is 2700 calories a day. As I eat keto I eat around 2000 to 2100 calories and I am stuffed. Is it bad to eat at such a large deficit? Is that a problem to work out with that low of calorie intake?
This guy's a beast!
